Oulu Mining Summit 2021 Program

Sustainable practices in mineral exploration and mine environment research in the Arctic.

The Oulu Mining Summit in 2021 will be held as a web-conference in September 14. – 15. 2021. This year the Oulu Mining Summit will concentrate on topics related to;1) the use of superficial glacial deposits in mineral exploration and 2) sustainable mining and environmental research.

Mineral exploration in formerly glaciated terrains, often covered with glacial sediments, imposes great challenges to discover new ore bodies in the underlying bedrock. In order to overcome these challenges, a profound knowledge on glacial geological processes including glacial stratigraphy, till geochemistry and former ice sheet behaviour is essential. This knowledge complemented with modern geophysical and other non-invasive and non-destructive prospecting methods together with high-resolution analyses, AI and data-processing methods are the key elements in the future exploration practices.

In the OM Summit one day session is dedicated to shed light on all aspects of mineral exploration in glaciated terrains. The invited key notes speakers in the session will cover a wide range of topics related to ore exploration.

During the second day, the talks are focused on themes covering various aspects of sustainable mine environment research including social issues related to mining operations in the Arctic. The keynote speakers will deliver talks ranging from non-invasive geophysical monitoring techniques and sustainable management of tailing storage facilities in Arctic mine environments to social licence to operate.
